Allure d’Asie Part Two

  • 30th May 2013

One of our favorite weeknight recipes takes the ease and comfort of a corn tortilla and loads it with simple, fresh Asian flavors.

Asian Pork Taco

Recipe adapted from William Sonoma Five-Spice Pork Wraps.

4 tsp. Chinese five spice

1 Tbs. kosher salt

3/4 tsp. freshly ground pepper

6 lb. boneless pork shoulder, cut into 10 large pieces

3 Tbs. vegetable oil

2 yellow onions, diced

1 1/2 tsp. finely grated fresh ginger

1 1/2 Tbs. minced garlic

1/3 cup soy sauce

1/3 cup rice wine vinegar

1/3 tsp.  red pepper or cayenne pepper

1 1/2 cups chicken broth

For Serving:

2 cups chopped fresh basil

1 pack fresh corn tortillas

2 cups chopped fresh cilantro

2 limes

3 carrots thinly sliced with a vegetable peeler

Thinly Sliced Carrots

Preheat an oven to 350°F.

In a small bowl, combine the Chinese five spice, red pepper, salt and pepper. Rub the mixture evenly on the pork.

In a pot, over medium-high heat, warm 2 Tbs. of the oil. Working in batches, brown the pork on all sides, 6 to 8 minutes per batch. Transfer to a large bowl.

Cooking the Pork Wraps

Reduce the heat to medium and warm the remaining 1 Tbs. oil. Add the yellow onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the ginger and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, for 1 minute. Add the soy sauce, the 1/3 cup rice vinegar, and the broth and bring to a simmer. Return the pork to the pot. Cover the pot, transfer to the oven and bake, turning the pork occasionally, until it is fork-tender, about 2 3/4 hours.
Using tongs and a fork, pull the pork apart into large chunks and gently shred.

Shredded Pork

On warm, blistered tortillas (we heat on the stove directly)  serve pork topped with basil, cilantro and carrots.  Squeeze fresh lime onto the top before rolling and eating!

‘Hot Town’ Beauty Essentials

How to Survive Summer in the City!

The days are heating up, thus it’s time to turn to our veteran beauty advisor through the years, Susan Linney for tips on how to keep looking cool and fresh-faced even as everyone else sweats….

Besides being smart, riotously funny and fashionable, Susan is always on-trend (or, more often than not, starting them!).  Ms.  Linney is a NYC-native who lives in Brooklyn, writes about beauty, and is currently obsessed with her Kusa Grass Flip Flops (check-out “Last Look” for a glimpse at these summer ‘must-haves’, you don’t want to miss them!).

We pop in to regularly to keep updated on her many spheres of authority as well as follow her on Pinterest.  Today, we’re lucky enough to have her summer advice front and center in our world.

Susan’s list of current product obsessions for the season:

As a beauty writer and editor, I try out a lot of different stuff, and I of course have my favorites. But I also often switch out beauty products when summer arrives in NYC. The heat and humidity that swelters above the sidewalks calls for some serious, specialized care. So here are eight of my summer essentials for this season, some of which are brand new to my warm-weather rotation.

Susan's Summer Best Beauty Products

1. Ouidad Sun Shield and Sport Spray

For a naturally curly haired girl like me, summer is one of the worst seasons for smooth hairstyles. So I often end up wearing my hair “au natural.” However, I never leave the house without spritzing my strands with this sun-shielding conditioning spray, which protects my color-treated hair from chlorine, salt water, and other damaging elements. And since it’s formulated especially for curly hair (Quidad is one of the best lines for this hair type), it also helps to define, soften and loosen my locks. Sun protectants are key this time of year, so I’d suggest finding one you like, no matter what kind of hair you have, to use throughout the day.

2. Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20

I’ve been using this foundation for over five years now and I doubt I’ll be switching anytime soon. The coverage is light and it glides seamlessly over my skin leaving a very subtle, healthy glow. It also adds an extra 20 of SPF so I know my face is truly covered from the sun’s dangerous (and wrinkle-causing) UVA and UVB rays.

3. Supergoop  Sunscreen Day Cream SPF 50

Even though my foundation has SPF, I still make sure to apply Supergoob’s Sunscreen Day Cream all over my face first. In the summer, I use it as my moisturizer—it’s super hydrating, blends quickly, and contains a host of antioxidants that naturally protect skin from free radical damage.

4. Lipstick Queen Lipstick in Jean Queen

My favorite lipstick ever, and it’s perfect year-round. Enough said.

5. Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Eye Cream

Yes, it’s pricey, but a jar of this creamy, wrinkle-fighting cream lasts forever, and the formula is truly worth the expense. Immediately upon applying, the under eye area is lightly illuminated, which helps to disguise dark circles even before any concealer is added. I’ve been using this for two months now and I definitely notice a difference (and so have my friends!).

6. Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional

I recently discovered this balm and I can easily say it’s the VIP of my summer beauty saviors for this season. It’s been a Godsend for my large pores and T-Zone slick spots, mattifying like a charm and make my pores appear practically invisible. It’s typically applied after you moisturize, but you can also dab it on over makeup if your icky areas start to to peak through during the day. Just keep it in your purse, and pat on lightly when needed.

7. Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Bronzer

I’ll admit, I’m a bit obsessed with bronzers. But this summer, I’m set on this formula from Physicians Formula. The best thing about it is that unlike most shimmery bronzers that make oily and sweaty skin look even more oily and sweaty, this powder is formulated with corn starch, leaving my face with a wonderfully matte, naturally looking tan glow.

8. Tatcha Petal Fresh Evening Aburatorigami Blotting Sheets

I carry blotting papers wherever I go. Tatcha’s sheets work wonderfully, and the packaging is so pretty, it’s just too sweet to resist. But I also stock up on NYX’s Blotting Papers, which are only $4 a pack, come in cute colors, and are great for absorbing oil on the go.

Parrot Tulip Nails

  • 26th May 2013

People have been asking and we are happy to disclose that our latest ‘nail inspiration’ comes fresh from the garden by way of our favorite tulips!

Tulip inspired Toe

Gold & Red Streaked and Fringy Tulip Inspired Nail Art

Gold and Red Parrot Tulip

Gold and Red Parrot Tulip

It’s clear to tell that we are not manicurists here.  However, this fun effect is super easy and very hard to mess up.

We began with a base coat that was a dark, earthy brown such as Essie, “Hot Cocoa.”  Before it dried we added Chanel, “Peridot.”  The key is before it dried.  The brush was almost completely clean minus a trace of Peridot allowing us to make three thin streaks starting from the base of the nail and fanning first to the left, then center and then the right.

The Trio of Polishes Used: Essie 'Hot Cocoa,' Chanel 'Peridot' and 'Pirate'

The Trio of Polishes Used: Essie ‘Hot Cocoa,’ Chanel ‘Peridot’ and ‘Pirate’

Peridot mimics the gold in the tulip but in certain lights it has a trace of green bringing in the stem and leaves….perfect!

Once again, before Peridot dried we added Chanel ‘Pirate’ in the same manner.  Barely a trace of red on the brush, three clean streaks starting from the base of the nail and mimicking the streaks on the tulip fanning left, center and right.  Voila!
